Hunzinger Construction University

Role: LEED Consultant to the Design/Builder

Rating: FIRST LEED-CI Platinum project in WI, 8th in the USA and 9th in the World

Hunzinger Construction University (HCU) is located at 21050 Enterprise Avenue in Brookfield, WI. Hunzinger Construction Company was the design/builder on this 3,000 SF renovation that was awarded the first Platinum LEED-CI certification in Wisconsin, 8th in the United States, and 9th in the world by the United States Green Building Council in March 2008. Sustainable Building Solutions served as LEED Consultant.

Due to the growth of HCU, founded to provide quality continuing education and field training for Hunzinger employees and outside guests, an adjacent property was purchased to create a stand-alone training facility to host educational workshops and events. Hunzinger made the decision to approach the renovation of the new University building as a LEED-CI Platinum project. The Platinum Certification was granted based on numerous criteria including a 42% reduction of building water usage, a 34% reduction of interior lighting power density beyond ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1-2004 and optimized energy performance in that every solar exposure has separate control zones, separately zoned interior spaces, and private offices and specialty occupancies have active controls capable of sensing space use and modulating HVACs response. Over 85% of the construction and demolition waste was diverted from landfills. Over 57% of materials used were reused from other projects and the recycled content was over 23% post-consumer and 1/2 pre consumer. Over 46% of the materials came from within 500 miles, 10% of the materials came from rapid renewable sources and over 51% of wood used was FSC certified. Daylight views over 90% of occupied space and low VOC emitting adhesive, sealants, paints, carpet, and systems furniture were utilized.
